Diva Lily
I have resigned from the Divine Divas as of August 2004 - It was really fun to be in the group for so long, but it was time to go. I will keep these pages up for a bit, and stay in the ring if that is possible. Feel free to snag some trinkets!

In Divine Diva, we get to select a "Diva" name. I didn't think that my name sounded like the name of a Diva, so I selected "Lily." Why?

Lily - purity, peace, resurrection, royalty. Sacred to all Virgin Goddesses...also represents the fertility of the Earth Goddess and later of the sky gods...fruitfulness...the feminine principle. - J. C. Cooper, An Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Traditional Symbols
At my hand, the rose and the lily, adorned by the Hand of Elohim.
The lily carries symbolic significance in most of the world religions. A lily symbolizes purity, hope, innocence, life, resurrection, even the death of innocents. It is the flower of the virgin Mary (Madonna Lily) and a lily blooming among thorns has been used to represent the Immaculate Conception. It also stands for the resurrected Christ (Easter Lily), and at least one angel (Gabriel). Together, the lily and the rose signify something like the ancient water lily, the lotus, with its long diverse history of religious meanings. The lotus responds to the sun, opening to the womb of the universe. The blue water lily Nymphaea caerulea (ancient symbol of Egypt) contains an anti-spasmotic having the effect of a hypnotic sedative. Lilies are closely related to lilacs, my favorite flower, and the lily of the valley thrives in the dark shade of my beloved woods. Then, there's Lily Marlene, Lily Langtry, and the lotus-woman of the Kama Sutra. And Lily just has a lovely melodic sound.
- Like a lily among thorns is my darling among the maidens. - Canticles (Song of Solomon) 2:2
- And said, O Lord that bearest rule, of every wood of the earth, and of all the trees thereof, thou hast chosen thee one only vine: And of all lands of the whole world thou hast chosen thee one pit: and of all the flowers thereof one lily. - Second Book of Esdras 5:23-24.
- "And give ye a sweet savour as frankincense, and flourish as a lily." - Ecclesiasticus, xxxix. 14
- I am he who rises and lights up wall after wall, each thing in succession. There will not be a day that lacks its owed illumination. Pass on, O creatures, pass on, O world! Listen! I have ordered you to! I am the cosmic water lily that rose shining from Nun's black primordial waters, and my mother is Nut, the night sky. O you who made me, I have arrived, I am the great ruler of Yesterday, the power of command is in my hand. - Spell 42, The Egyptian Book of the Dead
- Lotus and the virgin lily danced upon the rippling rill,
And the golden sunlight glittered on the greenwoods calm and still,
And the consecrated woodland by the holy hermits trod,
Shone like BRAHMA'S sky in lustre, hallowed by the grace of God! - Ramayana Book V, Panchavati (On the Banks of the Godavari)
- Come thou, let us begin with the Muses who gladden the great spirit of their father Zeus in Olympus with their songs, telling of things that are and that shall be and that were aforetime with consenting voice. Unwearying flows the sweet sound from their lips, and the house of their father Zeus the loud-thunderer is glad at the lily-like voice of the goddesses as it spread abroad, and the peaks of snowy Olympus resound, and the homes of the immortals. - The Theogony of Hesiod, ll. 36
- The cavern in the mountain they enter. Unto Hea are they hostile. The throne-bearers of the gods are they. Disturbing the lily in the torrents are they set. Baleful are they, baleful are they. Seven are they, seven are they, seven twice again are they. May the spirits of heaven remember, may the spirits of earth remember. - from "Charm against the Seven Evil Spirits," Ancient Near East / Babylonia
- Three kinds of most beautiful flowers are to be sought, and may be found in this Garden of the wise: Damask-coloured Violets, the milk-white Lily, and the purple and immortal flower of love, the Amaranth. - The Hermetic Arcanum, 53.
- Nature offers us nectar and ambrosia every day, and everywhere we go the rose and lily await us. "Spring visits us men," says Gu-do, "her mercy is great. Every blossom holds out the image of Tathagata." "What is the spiritual body of Buddha who is immortal and divine?" asked a man to Ta Lun (Dai-ryu), who instantly replied: "The flowers cover the mountain with golden brocade. The waters tinge the rivulets with heavenly blue." "Universe is the whole body of Tathagata; observed Do-gen. "The worlds in ten directions, the earth, grass, trees, walls, fences, tiles, pebbles-in a word, all the animated and inanimate objects partake of the Buddha-nature. Thereby, those who partake in the benefit of the Wind and Water that rise out of them are, all of them, helped by the mysterious influence of Buddha, and show forth Enlightenment." Kaiten Nukariya
- Certain roses--the imperial lily, the tuberose and the lilac--are said to have been cultivated from such a vast antiquity that they are not known in their wild state. - Darwin, Animals and Plants, vol. 1
- Van Helsing did not go to bed at all. He went to and fro, as if patroling the house, and was never out of sight of the room where Lucy lay in her coffin, strewn with the wild garlic flowers, which sent through the odour of lily and rose, a heavy, overpowering smell into the night. - Bram Stoker, Dracula, Ch. 13, Seward's Diary
- In joy or sadness, flowers are our constant friends. We eat, drink, sing, dance, and flirt with them. We wed and christen with flowers. We dare not die without them. We have worshipped with the lily, we have meditated with the lotus, we have charged in battle array with the rose and the chrysanthemum. We have even attempted to speak in the language of flowers. How could we live without them? It frightens one to conceive of a world bereft of their presence. What solace do they not bring to the bedside of the sick, what a light of bliss to the darkness of weary spirits? Their serene tenderness restores to us our waning confidence in the universe even as the intent gaze of a beautiful child recalls our lost hopes. When we are laid low in the dust it is they who linger in sorrow over our graves. - Kakuzo Okakura, The Book of Tea
- Oh Lily, why'd you have to cut your hair
Oh Lily, I loved us just the way we were
Princess of the field and daughter of the moon
Oh Lily - Joan Baez, "Lily"
- And the Lilywhite, I never knew her name
But she'll be passing my way sometime again. - Cat Stevens, "Lilywhite"
- What Fassbinder film was it where the man walks into a flower shop and asks, "What flower expresses days go by...days go by...and they just keep going by...endlessly...into the future?" and the florist says, ..."White Lily."? - Laurie Anderson, "White Lily"
- How I'm moved.
How you move me
With your beauty's potency.
You give me life.
Please don't let me go.
You crush the lily in my soul. - Kate Bush, "Moving"
- "Well I said "Lily, Oh Lily I don't feel safe
I feel that life has blown a great big hole
Through me"
And she said
"Child, you must protect yourself
I'll show you how with fire"
Uhh-uhh...Gabriel before me
Uhh-uhh...Raphael behind me
Michael to my right
Uriel on my left side
...In the circle of fire - Kate Bush, "Lily"
