Using history and context, the documentary Tuesday tells the story of how Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and others have waged a behind-closed-doors war to change the Pentagon, especially the U.S. Army, in service of a new foreign policy.

It’s a story that reaches all the way back to Vietnam and continued through the Gulf War, putting top military commanders in conflict with their civilian leaders over what the shape of U.S. forces would be and how they would be used. In the current Administration, the battle inside has shaped up between two factions, each with powerful
personalities as well as conflicting ideas about the American military, especially the Army. This internal battle continued even as the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq unfolded. For viewers who care about the U.S. military, this program provides vital background information to help understand the risks that the Army currently faces.

Regrettably, Secretary Rumsfeld declined a request for an interview and would not let anyone at the Pentagon talk to us. However, Rumsfeld¹s office did make an unusual offer. They would cooperate if FRONTLINE agreed to delay broadcast of the program until after the presidential election. FRONTLINE believes that whoever is elected will confront the continuing challenge of reshaping the military as it fights the war on
terror and that the story is an important one that should be seen now.

This documentary is FRONTLINE’s first co-production with The Washington Post which provided five of its most distinguished reporters to help tell this inside story. We hope you will be able to watch “Rumsfeld’s War” Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 9pm on PBS (check local listings) and after the broadcast visit our web site where you’ll be able to access Washington Post articles … a feature showing the intertwined relationships of the personalities … extended interviews … and the chance to express your opinion about our program at
