Ripping
Our wealthy neighbors are developing some of their acres of property. The plans seemed ok – three houses instead of 20.
We thought there would be a buffer zone, since the first house is back a bit, and away from ours. We live in at the edge of a forest, full of huge southern oaks and pines and some azaleas and really way too much poison oak.
Well, the bulldozers came in. From the driveway/road back about 15 feet or so, and extending to the property line, everything is gone. I saw – and heard – and felt – a huge tree go down.
My neighbor on the other side had come out to see, too. We looked at each other. So… my hubby joined us and all three went to try to talk to them to see what was going on, if plans had changed or what.
Well, it turns out that this massive destruction was all stipulated by the county because they’ll have to put in a road big enough for a firetruck to enter – everything has to be cleared back from the driveway for the road construction.
The view is a lot different now. Sigh.
Last night and today there was a lot of activity in our back yard. I’ve seen a raccoon, an opossum, three times more chipmunks and squirrels, and a lot more birds of all kinds. They were racing around looking agitated. Can’t say I blame them. I put out some food.
We got a visit from the (sacred) falcon that visits from time to time; usually he roosts and looks at us. Sometimes he meets another. This time he flew from tree to tree. In a way, it was great to see his beautiful caramel and charcoal wings, but again – he seemed agitated, restless.
What I didn’t hear were the mated owls. I hope they weren’t scared off. I think there might have been a rabbit den over there, too.
I’m a little nervous about the upcoming dynamiting that is planned. It’s supposed to be very exact, with minimal damage. I guess I’ll find out if there are any sinkholes on our property…

I’m so sorry.
I had the same thing happen to me here. I was right on the edge of a forrest and had Kangaroos, Emus, Blue Tongued Lizards, Black Cockatoos, Gallahs,
Yabbies and a whole host of other animals that the kids and I used to love seeing. Now they are all gone.
Seeing as we have now “progressed”. We have now replaced the unique and native flora and fauna with new and exciting animals to deal with. Termites, ants, drunken kids doing burnouts on high powered V8’s, cats, dogs, rats and a whole host of other, alternative animals are all around us to enjoy and appreciate.
I doubt that you would have sinkholes anywhere in Atlanta. There are fractures in the rock, though, and some old faults. Blasting in the wrong place might result in some rock slipping along one of those old faults.
That bit about the fire trucks does not surprise me. I know that they are required to send a fire truck out for every emergency call. All of the paramedics and ambulance services are with the fire department there.
I love your new page layout, by the way. However, something is causing an error to come up everytime that I come to it. The message says that a “script” is failing to load for some reason.
We had something similar happen at the last place we lived. We were planning to buy the house we were in and the guy sold it right out from under us. The forest around our place was destroyed right in front of us and my daughters were so upset. So was I, truth be told, but their hearts were broken and the owls we had that nested every year were gone. They and their babies were in the tree closest to our home and it rumbled the house like an earthquake and killed the babies when it fell. It’s been six years since then and my daughter still cries when she speaks of it. The gazillions of houses they built there make me sick when I drive by them. Progress? I think not.
p.s. I get a script error message when I load your site too btw. And I LOVE the new look!
Hmmm. Ok, I changed a couple of things. Any improvement? For me, it hesitates a couple of seconds for the Amazon box, but that’s all.
Can you give me more information? Do you see where the page stops, the last thing to load? Is there any message at the bottom left? What browser?
Hiya Heidi! I love the new look! I must agree with the previous commentor that there is some sort of script running that caused me to get a pop up from IE. The message asked if I “wanted to continue running the script on this page? Continuing to run this script can cause Internet Explorer to stop running.” I don’t know what that means, but what I noticed as soon as I clicked the “ok” button on the error message, suddenly then I saw your post articles. Until then, I only see the sidebars, and a large white section (where your posts show now).
Thank you for your comment on my blog today, I really appreciate it!
You know what? I discovered I only get the script error here at work! At home the site runs just fine with no errors at all. Guess we now know where I ought to be when visiting you eh? Have a good day my dear.
