Virgin Islands

Virgin Islands

For our tenth anniversary celebration, we’re going to the Virgin Islands.

We’ve got a short list of places to stay, but it’s based on zero experience.

The Westin St. John Resort – Expensive, but on the beautiful island of St. John, and John is naturally attracted by the synchronicity of the name (laughing).

Then, on St. Thomas:

The Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort – Kid friendly, huge swimming pools, predicable standard – but very, very big and the basic hotel room kind of setup.

Sapphire Beach Resort – Condos. That’s better, nice location for walking around.

Secret Harbour Beach – Smaller, secluded, beautiful beach, snorkeling.

Antilles Point Pleasant Resort – Cliffside with views, but it looks like a bit of a hike to the beach.

I don’t know very much about the different islands. Maybe we should be looking at the British Islands, or someplace like Martinique.

If you have any suggestions about the best places to stay, things to see and do, what to avoid, or anything like that, please comment.

  1. My favorite vacation spot — hands down — is Grand Cayman Island. Over the years, my wife and I have been to the Caymans, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Mexico, and Key West. The Virgin Islands were on our list, before the kids came around, but we never made it.

Grand Cayman was simply beautiful, and you can scuba dive there without certification. (Yes, I did. Probably lucky to be alive, but hey, you only live once, right? It was a good experience.)

I also loved Key West. Be prepared to see lots of nude images of men in the gift shops. I toured Ernest Hemingway’s house. I am a nerd.

Cozumel and Cancun are overrun with tourists and drunken 20-somethings. Not exactly my scene.

Jamaica was nice, but I think I had my fill the one time we went.

    That’s all I got.

Also understand that all these trips were between 1995 and 2002. I’m sure things have changed since then.

  2. Kid Friendly #1. Everywhere will have access to something wonderful to do and gorgeous to see. A kid friendly place gives the option to have adult time that might otherwise bore the child.
All-inclusive #2. It’s a hassle to manage meals and their expense. A good A-I will have multiple restaurants for good variety.
Economy #3. Not cheap, but easily budget-able. Vacations are meant to reduce stress, not create more once you return. Don’t try to justify, “well we haven’t been for xx years and I deserve it.” You do not deserve debt nor do you deserver expending all your reserves. The good time will happen because of you (**you’re so fantastic and I wish I was going**), not because of the size of your budget.
